Synopsis

Directed by Bimal Roy, this dramatic story was heavily influenced by the western mythologicals that were ruling Hollywood at the time. Based on the oft-filmed Parsee Theatre play, written by Agha Hashr Kashmiri, the story is set in ancient Rome. It is about Ezra (Sohrab Modi), a Jew, who is persecuted by the Romans. His daughter is spirited away by a devoted servant and grows up to become a beautiful woman, Hannah (meena Kumari). A Roman aristocrat, Marcus (Dilip Kumar) falls in love with Hannah and the rest of the plot concerns the obstacles that come in the way of their love. The movie marks the beginnings of Dilip Kumar’s tragic image, as he blinds himself at the end of this classic film, to atone for his sins. The film’s music is composed by Shanker – Jaikishen and includes the superbly picturised Mukesh number ‘Yeh Mera Deewanapan Hai’.
