Chaudhary (Shatrughan Sinha) assures Raju (Paintal) a simple villager of a good match for his sister Shobha (Rakhee) provided he marries Chaudhary's daughter. Raju agrees and Chaudhary in turn convinces Bhagat Ram a wealthy man to accept Shobha's proposal for his son Shyam (Jeetendra). Bhagat Ram makes a dowry demand. Chaudhary, a well-known man but with no real wealth assures Bhagat Ram that he shall fulfil the demand. While the wedding ceremony is underway Govind (C.S.Dubey), a meddlesome villager incites Bhagat Ram to demand the dowry money. On doing so Chaudhary fails to fulfil the demand and despite the ceremony being completed, Bhagat Ram takes his son and leaves poor Shobha behind.
Shyam, a principled young man returns to the city where he was studying and secretly takes his newly wedded wife along. They live happily together and eventually their son is born. Govind starts his trouble making again because he wants Shyam to marry his daughter. What will be the result of Govind's well-woven plan? Will Bhagat Ram accept Shyam and Shobha? Well-composed tunes by Laxmikant Pyarelal to the lyrics of Anand Bakshi include Phurr Se Ud Jaati Thi and Arre Dekh Re Dekh.
