Synopsis
A Tamilian boy Gopi (Kamal Hasan), loves his Hindi speaking neighbor Sona (Rati Agnihotri). In spite of not
being able to converse with each other - as she does not know his language and he does not understand
what she says - their love blooms and grows. Their relationship is unacceptable to their parents as they
are interested in marrying them to persons of their own religion and regions. In opposition to their parent’s wishes,
they promise to get married to each other only. They agree to put their love through a test by not meeting or
communicating with each other for a year. Gopi leaves town and meets a young widow (Madhavi) from whom he learns
to speak Hindi. She begins to love him but when she finds out about his love for Sona, she decides to sacrifice
her love for him. On completion of the one year period, Gopi goes to meet his love…but Fate has something
else in store for them...
K Balachander introduced Kamal Hasan to Hindi films with Ek Duje Ke Liye. Raj Kapoor allegedly
asked L V Prasad to change the climax but the original finale was kept on and made the film one of the
most popular romances ever! S P Balasubramaniam made his debut in the Hindi film industry with the film.
