Raghu (Jayant), is a widower with 3 children - Laxmi, Ramu and Munna. He can't makes ends meet on his meagre income. To add to his woes, his landlord (Randhir) is a heartless man who confiscates Raghu's cycle in lieu of the rent Raghu owes him. Without the cycle, Raghu reaches late for work and is fired. When he defies the dismissal order and starts welding, he is blinded by the welding sparks. Unable to take his misfortunes, he runs away.
The children are thrown out of the house. Laxmi and Munna land up in a rich man Thakur's house, who has a son and a daughter. The boss of a drama company picks up Ramu. The children grow up. Ramu (Sunil Dutt) is a famous singer-actor but leaves the company to work as a manager in Rai Sahab's mill, falling in love with his daughter (Mumtaz). Laxmi (Jamuna), now a servant in Thakur's house and Madhu, the Thakur's son, fall in love. Munna, kidnapped from the Thakur's house, grows up as Mahesh (Mehmood), a juggler and falls in love with Sarla (Shobha Khote), Madhu's sister. Will Laxmi, Ramu and Munna find each other? Will they be re-united with their blind father? Will each of them find true love?
Beti Bete is yet another family drama in the LV Prasad mould of filmmaking, with all familiar hallmarks - a strong story line, a powerful script and good performances. The film's music by Shanker Jaikishen, at the peak of their career at the time, adds much to its performance in the box office, with hit songs like "Aaj kal me dhal gaya", "Gori chalo na hans ki chal " and "Radhike tune bansari churai "
