Kumar (Rishi Kapoor) son of Rana Uday singh returns home after a long period. Knowing that he is good artist, his friend Neha insists that he sketches her portrait. He works on it but the end result is devastating as he has painted someone else's face. A girl he has never seen before. The girl of the portrait is Reshma (Sridevi) a Banjraran. Reshma is haunted by a dream of a mystery man which she sees every full moon night since she was a child. In one of the village gatherings, Kumar finds the girl of his painting and Reshma sees in Kumar the man of her dreams, who had tormented her for years.They keep meeting and eventually fall in love, yet they can't explain the enigma of the portrait and the dream. The mystery deepens when they see Reshma's portrait on the walls of an ancient haveli. Both their families are against their relation so they refuse once again in the old haveli and Thakur Baba the owner welcomes them but their families arrive intending to kill the them.
