The conflict of good and evil is deeply entrenched in the Indian psyche and takes many forms. The most accessible and popular being the epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Myths that are passed on from generation to generation. Unlike in Western narrative structures, the battle of good and evil is not just a battle for the real world that we see around us. In the Indian context, its a fight for the very spirit of a human being. For after all, there is darkness and light in all of us. They are just two ends of the same spectrum. Two sides of the same coin. The movie explores the ancient Indian philosphy that the ultimate battlefield for good and evil is nothing but a human being's body. And the ultimate prize: his Soul. Aks is a modernistic rendition of this ancient conflict of good and evil. While it takes the form of an avante garde psychological thriller, it is just a structure to explore this timeless philosophy. Aks then is the story of a hunter and his prey. A cop and a killer. Darkness and Light. Aks is the story of Manu Verma and Raghavan. The story begins innocently enough, in the heart of Budapest. The Indian Defence Minister is on, what seems to be, a routine foreign visit. However, the truth of the matter is that there is a hidden agenda behind the smiles and the handshakes. The visit is only an elaborate cover. As the motorcade makes its way through the streets of the old Hungarian capital, the Indian Defense Minister reveals the true details of this diplomatic trip, to his Head of Security, Manu Verma. At the heart of the matter, he explains, lies a floppy, with valuable information that could affect the very destiny of the nation. This is not the only sensitive news that has been revealed to the Head of Security, that day. Intelligence sources have revealed to Manu Verma, that a lone assassin, long feared for his ruthlessness, has been paid to elminate the Defense Minsiter. The shadowy figure is called Raghavan. Througout the visit Manu Verma can feel Raghavan's eyes watching their every move. Waiting for that opportunity to strike. Before the evening is through, Manu Verma's sixth sense proves right. He reaches the Indian Defense Minister just moments too late, and finds the statesman in a pool of blood. Raghavan has struck and vanished into thin air. The floppy has vanished with him. From this moment on begins a manhunt of epic proportions. Manu Verma becomes a man obessed with capturing Raghavan. Nothing matters to him now except his prey. Futhermore, he begins finding Raghavan's handiwork, a familiar trail of dead bodies, all around the city. In the process, Manu Verma digs deeper into the heart of darkness. He scours, the underbelly of the city. The labyrinth of the jungles. And the vortex of the deepest caves before he finally catches his prey. Then he takes Raghavan back to stand trial for his crimes. However, one night before Raghavna's sentence of death is to be carried out, Manu Verma's nemesis makes a final bid to escape. Snatching a revolver from the police guard near him, Raghavan levels the gun on Manu Verma and the other officers. Manu Verma responds swiftly and draws his own piece. For a nanosecond both men are mirror images of each other. Dark and Light. Good and Evil. Cop and Killer. Locked in a final dance of death. Then both guns explode And the nightmare begins.
